Marafonas

Genuine pieces of the traditional culture of Monsanto, a historic village located in the municipality of Idanha-a-Nova, the “marafonas” are dolls dressed with regional clothing. Handmade from a wooden cross without eyes, nose or mouth, the tradition was for these dolls to be laid on the wedding couple’s bed during the wedding night, for good luck. They symbolize Maia, the Goddess of Fecundity.
